It should be noted that local prices quoted may not be the cheapest available, sourcing it from another region may be more affordable, and buyers are encouraged to evaluate all options. Prices are indicative to a mid-range shedded product, and based on the best indication of market value at the time of reporting. It should be noted there is a wide variation in quality of hay, prices for a mid-range product will not reflect the weighted average of trade. Prices will naturally vary based on the product quantity and quality, buyer/seller relationship and the size of the trade.The hay report has been commissioned by Dairy Australia to provide an independent and timely assessment of hay markets in each dairy region. This report is created using data provided by the Australian Fodder Industry Association (AFIA). It should be remembered that actual prices may vary for quality or other reasons. Commentary
- Moderate rainfall across the region this week, with heavier falls towards the south of the region.
- Pasture growth continues to improve through the valley with well-timed rainfall alongside warmer and clearer days. This is supplying plenty of green feed for livestock, reducing the need for supplementary feeding.
- Silage season commenced around Bemboka in the last week as conditions proved favourable for cutting and baling.
- Brassica, phalaris and clover pastures in the south of the region are providing high quality green feed for livestock across the region.
- With a wet spring forecast, there are concerns about the availability and cost of fertiliser to address waterlogging damage to crops.
- Hay demand has stabilised, with many growers out in the paddocks preparing for the hay or silage season, as well as the lack of any available good quality produce. Straw is still moving quite well, as is most of the remaining hay available. Most demand is in relation to the new season.

- Cereal hay: +/-0 ($265 to $300/t). Prices remain steady this week.
- Lucerne hay: +/-0 ($480 to $520/t). Prices remain steady this week.
- Straw: +/-0 ($180 to $210/t). Prices remain steady this week.
- Pasture hay: +/-0 ($330 to $360/t). Prices remain steady this week.
